2014 Turnbull Stakes runners - Lowdown on the leading Turnbull Stakes contenders

Lucia Valentina

The Group 1 Turnbull Stakes is the highlight of a huge day of racing this Saturday at Flemington and the pivotal Spring Carnival lead up race looks set to attract a star studded line up.

Get your money back up to $100 at Sportsbet if your horses finishes 2nd or 3rd in the Turnbull Stakes.

Here are the leading contenders:

Lucia Valentina ($4.60 Sportsbet)

Promising four-year-old mare Lucia Valentina lines up in the Turnbull Stakes this weekend and looks to be a top hope over the Flemington 2000m. The Australian Oaks (2400m) placegetter resumed with a barnstorming win when first up in the Tramway Stakes (1400m) before running 6th behind Sacred Falls in the George Main Stakes (1600m). When third up in the autumn, the former Kiwi was a big winner of the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m). If she is able to run up to that form again on Saturday she will be hard to beat.

Silent Achiever ($6.50 Sportsbet)

Top New Zealand mare Silent Achiever is another who is third up on Saturday and the six-year-old should be ready to fire on Saturday. She resumed in the Memsie Stakes (1400m) with a fast-finishing 4th behind Dissident before travelling wide when 5th in the Underwood Stakes (1800m). Silent Achiever took out the Ranvet Stakes (2000m) and BMW (2400m) in brilliant fashion in the autumn and will go close.

Puissance De Lune ($7.00 Sportsbet)

Darren Weir finally broke through for a Group 1 win in Victoria last weekend with Trust In A Gust and the quality trainer will be aiming for two wins at the highest level in successive weeks with Puissance De Lune. The grey galloper has been building up to a win and has placed 3rd in successive Group 1 races behind Dissident. Last year he was a narrow second in this race behind Happy Trails. He has a good record at Flemington and will run well.

Happy Trails defeats Puissance de Lune in last year's Turnbull Stakes

Happy Trails ($7.00 Sportsbet)

In an open race, another chance is last years Cox Plate (2040m) runner up Happy Trails. The South Australian galloper took out last year's Turnbull and appears to be going every bit as well this time around. He ran 2nd to Foreteller in the Underwood Stakes (1800m), a race he came 4th in last year before winning at Flemington. The seven-year-old is another with a super record at the headquarters of racing and should be right in the thick of things.

Crackerjack King ($8.00 Sportsbet)

An interesting runner in the race is the David Hayes and Tom Dabernig-trained Crackerjack King. The former import was a big improver last time, going very close in the Underwood Stakes at big odds. The lightly raced seven-year-old led in that race before being grabbed in the dying stages by Foreteller and Happy Trails. Crackerjack King originally raced in Italy and won seven from eight before coming to Australia to race. Early on in Australia he suffered an injury which kept him on the sidelines and his Underwood run was only his 3rd start in this country. If he continues his improvement he may be able to upset some of the leading fancies.

Hawkspur ($9.00 Sportsbet)

The Chris Waller-trained galloper makes the trip down south for a shot at the Turnbull and the five-year-old has been racing well in some of the big Sydney mile events. Hawkspur took out the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes before placing 4th behind stablemate Sacred Falls in the Group 1 George Main Stakes. He was a close 4th in this event last year and is an each-way chance again this year.
