Lucia Valentina lands Turnbull Stakes at Flemington

Lucia Valentina wins the Turnball Stakes at Flemington

Star filly Lucia Valentina won the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Saturday.

With the Spring Carnival starting to hit top gear there was a feast of racing action on Saturday with four big Group 1 events at both Flemington and Randwick.

In the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington, Lucia Valentina justified her spot as favourite as the Caulfield Cup (2400m) market leader with a big win from the Peter Moody-trained pair of Brambles and Lidari.

After being a slight drifter in the betting, the Kris Lees-trained four-year-old showed a blistering turn of foot to take out the $500,000 event.

Lees will now head into the Caulfield Cup full of confidence after the exciting mare scored her second Group 1 win.

In what is traditionally a big Spring Carnival lead up, The Offer worked home well to grab 6th but reportedly felt the firm track. Silent Achiever lacked the zip that was on display in the Sydney autumn, finishing 9th whilst Happy Trails never saw daylight and was eased out of it to come 14th.

Also in Melbourne it was another big win for the Hawkes-trained Chautaqua who ran up to his stunning Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) win with another big performance, this time in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m).

Despite rising in weight, the four-year-old was simply too good as he smashed a handy field including Bounding and Temple Of Boom.

Earlier in the day, Who Shot Thebarman looked very smart taking out the Bart Cummings (2520m), whilst Fontein Ruby led and held on in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m).
