Taking place during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, the Turnbull Stakes is a set weights plus penalties contest that is open to horses aged four-years-old and upwards.

With $500,000 in prizemoney, the Turnbull Stakes carries Group 1 status and is one of the key races used by stayers heading towards the Caulfield Cup (2400m), Cox Plate (2040m) and Melbourne Cup (3200m).

Draped in a prestigious and rich history, the Turnbull Stakes, formerly known as the Royal Park Stakes, September Stakes, October Stakes and Melbourne Stakes prior to its current name (from 1948 onwards) was first run in 1865 when taken out by The Sign.

A high-number of champion racehorses have captured the Turnbull Stakes at some point in their careers.

Notable winners include The Barb (1868), Trenton (1885-1886), Carlyon (1887), Wakeful (1903), Eurythmic (1920), Amounis (1930), Ajax (1938 & 1940), Bernborough (1946), Comic Court (1949-50), Rising Fast (1954), Redcraze (1955), Tobin Bronze (1966), Galilee (1968), Leilani (1974), Dulcify (1979), Vo Rogue (1987-88), Super Impose (1989), Better Loosen Up (1990), Let’s Elope (1991), Naturalism (1992), The Phantom Chance (1993), Doriemus (1996), Sky Heights (1999), Sunline (2001), Northerly (2002), Elvstroem (2004), Makybe Diva (2005), Efficient (2009), Zipping (2010), Green Moon (2012) and Happy Trails (2013).

Hall of Fame trainer Lee Freedman has enjoyed plenty of success in the Turnbull Stakes with six winners. He saddled up Super Impose (1989), Naturalism (1992), Doriemus (1996), Marble Halls (1997), Makybe Diva (2005) and Sphenophyta (2006).

A number of key lead-up races exist with some runners coming through the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) held at Moonee Valley four weeks earlier.

The Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) held at Caulfield one week prior is another that some runners will use before backing up one week later. Another race held at Caulfield is the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) and on occasion a runner will come through that race.

In recent years, the Memsie Stakes (1400m) and Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) have been key races heading into the Turnbull Stakes.

Sydney gallopers will often come through either the Group 2 Hill Stakes (2000m) or Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m).

Preferment is the most recent winner of the Turnbull Stakes and the Chris Waller-trained stayer claimed the Hill Stakes prior to the Turnbull in 2015.
