The $500,000 Turnbull Stakes is the highlight on a nine-race program from Flemington on Sunday. Due to the AFL Grand Final being held on Saturday between Hawthorn and West Coast, the Turnbull Stakes meeting takes place the following day.

A wide-open Turnbull Stakes will be Race 7 on the card and is scheduled to be run at 4:10PM.

There are plenty of chances in this year’s Turnbull Stakes with the market headed by Hartnell, Rising Romance, Amralah, Alpine Eagle and Royal Descent in no particular order. It is currently double figures the rest but a number of these runners have strong claims also with Flemington specialist Happy Trails, Preferment, Volkstok’n’barrell Dandino, Weary, Set Square and Gust Of Wind given a chance of claiming the event.

Three Group 2 features support the Turnbull Stakes.

The Gilgai Stakes (1200m) takes place down the ‘straight six’ and will be held as Race 3 at 1:40PM.

While the Turnbull Stakes is a wide open contest, the Gilgai Stakes could be a procession for defending winner Chautauqua who is one of Australia’s best sprinters. He won the event by four lengths in 2014 and it would be no surprise to see him do something similar this time around. Delectation, Charlie Boy, Churchill Dancer and Knoydart loom as his main opposition but can they stop the grey?

Three-year-old fillies compete in Race 5 at 2:50PM – the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m).

Don’t Doubt Mamma was a nice winner last start over Sacred Eye in a 3YO Fillies Plate (1400m). Those two are right in this contest as they meet Sailing By who chased home Victoria Derby prospect Tarzino last start. Badawiya was a good winner last start also has strong claims whilst rougher chances go to My Poppette, Bengal Cat, Lazumba, Thames Court and Dulverton.

The Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m) is for the mares and will be held at 4:50PM as Race 8 on the card.

Although that race should be a beauty, Race 6, the Group 3 The Bart Cummings (2520m) should be even better at 3:30PM with the winner receiving an automatic spot in this year’s Melbourne Cup.

Classy import Our Ivanhowe is Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup bound and should be a strong chance of taking this race out. Foundry is another with strong claims along with Bold Sniper who is owned by Her Majesty The Queen. Let’s Make Adeal, Kapour, Wexford Town and At First Sight are also in the hunt for their Melbourne Cup golden ticket.
