Roughies Tips - 3 roughies to back at Flemington on Sunday October 2

  • Who are the value runners on Turnbull Stakes day at Flemington on October 2?
Manageress placed behind La Passe in the Blazer Stakes in 2015

It is a smorgasbord of racing in Australia over the weekend and the action extends to Sunday for the Turnbull Stakes (2000m) meeting at Flemington, where there is no shortage of big fields and plenty of value to be found.

We have looked through the nine-race programme at the venue and picked out the best three roughies to back for the day, each-way.

Race 6 - 3:15PM TAB Edward Manifold Stakes (1600 METRES)

The fillies step up to the 1600m in the Edward Manifold Stakes and in a race with plenty of unknowns, it may pay to have an each-way bet on Whyyouask. The Matt Laurie contender is one of many chances in the capacity field and comes off a solid 3rd placing behind Exocet, who has been posted as favourite in this. That run came a few weeks ago at Caulfield over the 1400m journey and she really hit the line hard from the back of the field. Prior to that, she travelled wide and had a few excuses when 8th at this track over 1400m. She should be one that will be suited up in trip and will get a very cosy run from the inside barrier. If the breaks go her way at the business end of the race, she could be the one at odds.

Flemington Race 7 - 3:55PM Yellowglen Turnbull Stakes (2000 METRES)

Group 1 action returns to Flemington on Sunday and a value contender shapes as the Godolphin-trained Tally. The four-year-old represents a bit of X-factor in this and comes with slightly different formline to some of the favoured runners. At his last start he just missed out behind the winning machine, Royal Rapture, over the 1700m and should only improve off that run. At the same stage of his last campaign, he stepped up to the 2000m and destroyed the two-time Group 1 winner, Palentino, in the Alistair Clark Stakes (2040m) before running an admirable 3rd in the Australian Derby (2400m). The son of Street Cry looks to be a real progressive type and the $26 on offer is overs.

Flemington Race 8 - 4:35PM Blazer Stakes (1400 METRES)

Manageress returns for another crack at a Flemington 1400m after running a sizzling race at her first run from a long layoff recently. On that occasion, the Cindy Anderson-trained mare rattled home late to finish 3rd behind Don't Doubt Mamma and should only improve off that. Last spring, she showed her class by placing twice at Group 2 level at the track, including once over the 1400m journey before beating all but Lucia Valentina in the Matriarch Stakes (2000m) on Stakes day. The daughter of Magnus looks to be suited by the set weights and penalties conditions of the race and should get a nice run from Barrier 7. In the big field, she is a very solid contender at the double figure odds.
