2014 Turnbull Stakes Quinella, Trifecta and First Four tips

Dwayne Dunn riding Happy Trails defeats Glen Boss riding Puissance de Lune (r) in the Turnbull Stakes

Picking one winner is a hard enough task on any given day let alone trying to pick the first two, three or four to salute the judge first in Saturday’s Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington.

The $500,000 feature is such an open affair it wouldn't surprise to see a few big-priced runners fill the placings and return a handsome dividend for exotics punters.

Here are my best Quinella, Trifecta and First Four in the Turnbull Stakes:

BOXED QUINELLA: Happy Trails ($7 Sportingbet) and Puissance De Lune ($6)

Happy Trails and Puissance De Lune fought out the finish in last year’s Turnbull Stakes and I’m predicting it will be the same result this year.
The Paul Beshara-trained Happy Trails was nowhere near his top in the Underwood Stakes (1800m) last start and his trainer was hoping to at least finish around 5th – 7th to know his galloper was on track for his main spring target, the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m). The fact that he got back and bumped his way clear on the corner before charging home to nearly snatch the race from Foreteller, suggests he has come back in fantastic order and will only improve. He won’t have to do any work from barrier 1 and if he gets a clear run in the straight, he is certainly the horse to beat.
Puissance De Lune has improved at every start this campaign and he meets Happy Trails 1.5kg better off than when they met in last year’s Turnbull. Trainer Darren Weir claimed his first Group 1 win in Melbourne last week when Trust In A Gust won a head-bobber in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) and it wouldn’t surprise to see Weir capture a few more over the carnival now that the monkey is off his back. The talented son of Shamardal missed the Underwood this year and could be better suited with a bit of freshness in his legs.

TRIFECTA:

Super Cool ($26) is the X-factor horse in the race and should be thrown in for 1st along with Happy Trails and Puissance De Lune. He has improved considerably at every start and worked home well last start when finishing 2.4 lengths behind Foreteller in the Underwood. He worked home slightly better than Green Moon who will jump from barrier 14, and he meets Green Moon 2.5kg better off while also drawing barrier 4. He has plenty of natural improvement to come and his trainer Mark Kavanagh has won two Turnbulls in the past few years.

The Peter Moody-trained Lidari ($26) has been knocking on the door and has great lead-up form. The French-import gets in really well at the weights with just 55.5kg and just needs some luck to figure in the placings.

Also throw the David Hayes and Tom Dabernig-trained Stipulate ($9.50) in for 2nd. He was clearly in need of race fitness when charging home to finish just 2.7 lengths behind Foreteller in the Underwood and drops from 59kg to 54.5kg.

For 3rd place, throw in, Green Moon ($26), Entirely Platimum ($13) and Lucia Valentina ($5.50)
