Alpine Eagle (L) races past Firehouse Rock to win the Caulfield Autumn Stakes

Sunday’s Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington has attracted a field of 16 quality gallopers, and the new kid on the block, Alpine Eagle, looks set to take his place among the elite performers in 2015.

Trained by Tony McEvoy, the flashy son of High Chaparral covered more ground than any other runner in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) and finished less than a length behind Fawkner and Rising Romance.

Fawkner has since franked the form with a narrow 2nd placing in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) while Rising Romance is set to line up in opposition but meets Alpine Eagle 2.5kg worse at the weights.

Despite the tough run where he was caught three wide for the trip and was the widest runner on the turn, Alpine Eagle kept coming in the straight and just seemed to peak on his run with 50m to go.

Being by High Chaparral, out of the Zabeel mare Zephyria, the step up to 2000m for the first time in his career is likely to see him produce a personal best.

He produced a massive third-up run last campaign when coming from a hopeless position in the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) at Caulfield, and a similar effort on Sunday with just 54.5kg on his back will put him right in the finish.

Barrier 14 presents the biggest concern and jockey Mark Zahra will have to produce one of his very best, but considering the horse had no luck last time and went so close, it’s hard to see just bad luck stopping him with the light weight.

Harntnell, Dandino and Rising Romance have all drawn wider barriers and will also need some luck, while at the weights, Alpine Eagle looks to have Makybe Diva Stakes runners Happy Trails, Volkstok’n’barrell, Magicool, Dandino, Weary, Gust Of Wind and Awesome Rock covered.

Three of Chris Waller’s runners, Preferment, Who Shot Thebarman and Royal Descent, bring good Sydney form to the race and are hard to line up, but considering Alpine Eagle is bred to stay, will strip much fitter from his second-up run and has shown blistering acceleration, he truly does look a standout in an open field.
